Join Olivia Avery for this deep dive into mug making and decorating. Olivia is coming north for the Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail and will be teaching this workshop on the Monday and Tuesday following the trail.
“A mug is as personal as a fingerprint in the ceramic community- they are never a one size fits all! My approach to mug making has taken a playful and inquisitive turn in the last year. Can we remember how to play? Can we communicate our style in one mug and a different idea in the next?”

On day one, participants will learn and practice the nuances of throwing, trimming and handling a variety of mug forms with consideration to aesthetics and functionality. Some previous wheel throwing experience is required.
The workshop will run from 10-5. Lunch will be provided.
Students are encouraged to bring their own tools, there are also some tools to borrow at The Handle Factory. Clay for the workshop is included in the tuition. If participants would like to have The Handle Factory fire items from the workshop, they can be shipped for a fee.
Olivia Avery is a clay artist from Memphis, TN. She’s been working with clay for almost a decade and is honored to work and live with this material. Growing up in a family of twelve Olivia often sought rest and stillness outdoors within the plants. The relationship between humans and nature, especially plants, has always astounded her. Olivia received her BFA in ceramics and drawing from Union University and makes functional pottery alive with colorful plant motifs.
