Description

This class will meet Saturday mornings 10-12, April 1, 8, 15, 29. No Class on April22

.

The purpose of this course is to increase your skills and confidence with what we have available in the Handle Factory Glaze area. Students can use this as an opportunity to explore glazes they are less familiar with and expand their ‘go to’ glazing palette through working with test tiles and using good documentation strategies. Prior experience with glazing is encouraged.

Students will have up to 4 hours a week of additional studio time available to work with test tiles and glazing.

Clay will be provided for test pieces. Masks must be worn.

In this 4 session class we will develop a greater understanding of our studio glazes and what unlimited possibilities there are to explore them. We will:

-Review studio glazes with a simple intro to glaze chemistry.

-Learn how to prepare the glaze for more consistent results.

-Develop good glaze habits.

-Analyze pots that developed problems or just didn’t turn out as planned.

-Consider the importance of the pots surface- shapes, aesthetics, purpose, texture. Learning how to plan ahead and envision the glazed result when creating the vessel or sculpture.

-Develop habits of documentation and the use of test tiles. You will have the opportunity to make test pieces that reflect the direction of your work and develop a thoughtful approach to testing.

-Explore surface decoration techniques with slips, underglazes, wax resist, stains.

-Review the various tools available in the glaze area- types of brushes, wax resist, use of turntables, squeeze bottles, pouring vs dipping.

-Strategize glazing challenging shapes.

The last class will be devoted to share results and may be open to a time change depending on

firing schedules for finishing up work.
