Exploring Glazes and Techniques at the Handle Factory

5 Classes- Saturday mornings 10 – 12

May 4, 11, 18 and 25 one week off, last class June 8

The purpose of this course is to develop understanding, skills and confidence in glazing. We will be using the glazes we have available at the Handle Factory.

Students will experiment with glazes and combinations thus developing more predictable glazing palettes using test tiles and careful note keeping.

Prior experience with glazing is encouraged.

Students will have 4 hours a week of additional studio time available.

Clay will be provided for test pieces. A choice of white or brown clay is recommended.

Please wear masks if you or anyone in you close network is not feeling well.

We will-

-Review studio glazes with a simple intro to glaze chemistry.

-Learn how to prep glazes for more consistent results.

-Develop good glaze habits.

-Analyze pots that developed problems or just didn’t turn out as planned.

-Consider the importance of the pots surface- shapes, aesthetics, purpose, texture.

-Strategize glazing challenging shapes.

Most Importantly we will-

Develop habits of using test tiles and good documentation. You will make test pieces that reflect the direction of your work and develop a thoughtful approach to testing.

-Learn how to maximize the information gained from using test pieces.

-Explore surface decoration techniques with slips, underglazes, wax resist, stains and chalks.

The last class will be devoted to share our results. Having a week off before this last class allows the firing to catch up so we will have finished test pieces to review. There is an amazing amount to learn from each other’s experiments!!!
